Chapter 1:
The narrative begins with the author, Sudhir Venkatesh, venturing into an unfamiliar building where he encounters JT, a gang leader. Sudhir's purpose is to conduct a survey, but JT quickly informs him that surveys cannot capture the true essence of their experiences, leading Sudhir to realize the limitations of traditional data collection methods.
Chapter 2:
Determined to delve deeper, Sudhir returns the next day to continue his discussions with JT about the Black Kings gang. However, JT remains reticent and guarded, displaying a lack of trust towards Sudhir, which hampers the flow of information.
Chapter 3:
JT's recent promotion provides an opportunity for Sudhir to accompany him to his birthplace. Here, Sudhir meets various individuals who have worked alongside JT, gaining a richer understanding of JT’s background and the people who shaped his journey.
Chapter 4:
Curious about JT's responsibilities, Sudhir expresses his belief that JT’s leadership role seems straightforward. In response, JT challenges Sudhir to take on the leader’s role for a day. Sudhir quickly discovers the complexity and difficulty of JT's position as he struggles to manage the gang’s affairs effectively.
Chapter 5:
In this chapter, Sudhir shadows Ms. Bailey, the president of the building’s tenants association. Initially expecting her to be a benevolent figure, Sudhir is surprised to learn that she wields her power in a harsh and often manipulative manner, revealing the intricate dynamics of leadership within the community.
Chapter 6:
Eager to expand his understanding of the gang’s ecosystem, Sudhir expresses a desire to meet other figures in the community. JT arranges for Sudhir to interact with pimps, prostitutes, and hustlers. While Sudhir collects valuable insights, he inadvertently shares sensitive information with the wrong people, resulting in distrust and animosity towards him.
Chapter 7:
A pivotal moment occurs when one of JT’s men is shot during a drive-by. Sudhir steps in to assist, earning JT’s gratitude. This act of solidarity strengthens their bond, and JT subsequently introduces Sudhir to more influential figures within the gang and the broader community.
Chapter 8:
The story reaches a critical juncture as the building is slated for demolition. Residents, desperate and uncertain about their future, scramble to find new housing, with little help from the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA). Concurrently, JT decides to leave the gang life behind, investing in a barbershop. Unfortunately, this venture quickly fails, adding another layer of complexity to his transition out of the gang.
